Therapeutic Approach

I’m a psychotherapist with over 13 years’ experience helping people navigate difficult times. I believe in a warm, human approach – one that’s rooted in empathy, acceptance and evidence-based techniques.

The type of counselling I practise is Integrative Counselling, which means I can draw on different approaches and activities according to your individual needs.

I understand that opening up to a counsellor, especially for the first time, can be a challenging experience, and I aim to make that process as easy as possible for you by being warm, empathic and non-judgemental. Nurturing a good relationship with you is at the heart of what I do.

I pay attention to your life history alongside what is happening in the present. Together, we will explore how this impacts on your beliefs, self-concept, emotions, behaviours, and coping strategies. As well as helping you tell your story and make sense of your life experiences, I emphasise positive work like defining and working towards manageable goals, improving self-care, building on strengths and resources, and post-traumatic growth.

Sometimes I suggest CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy) techniques. This can help tackle anxieties and improve confidence, and I can also help you with assertiveness skills. I enjoy creative, intuitive work, such as getting in touch with your emotions through mindfulness or imaginative techniques and linking this with body feelings.

Having trained and worked extensively in counselling and psychotherapy for assault and abuse, I offer specific strategies for relieving the effects of trauma such as panic attacks, nightmares, phobias, intrusive images/thoughts, and flashbacks and for processing these difficult memories.

I also have a special interest in the connection between the natural world and our mental health, nature-assisted therapy (often called ecotherapy), and helping people affected by concerns about the wider world.

Your First Session – What To Expect

In the first session, the main question is what brought you to counselling – what are your main problems or goals for therapy?

I work holistically and so the big picture is important – everything is connected. So I also like to ask about some background information – how you spend your time, who are the main people in your life, some family history, significant events, what you like and don’t like, your physical wellbeing, and so on. After that (usually in the second session), we can identify your priorities and start to focus on those in depth.

The type of therapy I do is client-led, which means I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. So I can’t tell you upfront how your therapy will be structured. Rather, together we will be figuring out what works for you as we go along.

It doesn’t matter what order you tell me things in, and you don’t need to tell me everything straight away. You might arrive knowing exactly what you want to say, or you might have no idea where to start. If you like, you can just talk, or I can ask questions or make suggestions if that makes it easier.

You might want to go slowly or fast. All of these and everything in between are fine. I trust that, over time, together we will put the picture together. I will do my best to help you feel relaxed and safe, and you’re welcome to ask questions or feed back to me at any time.
